First rapel of 30 meters, WITHOUT the equipment:  harness, carabiners, eight, life-vest nor helmet.

MATACANES 1969.-

In one of the excursions we often made to Potrero we had the curiosity to know that was a strong roar that did the water fall when were walking by the path from Potrero Redondo to Laguna de Sanchez. We decided to turn aside itself to see that one treated, when seeing that impressive panorama we asked ourselves if it would be the same river of Las Adjuntas.

We decided to return to the following weekend armed with a long cotton rope, we lowered and pass it between the legs to make the necesary friction, but the slope was very heavy, to the point that I had myself to undo of my backpack which contained one camara of shooting which was destroyed. When arriving, we retired the rope and we advanced in the canyon.

When arriving at the second rapel (upper matacan; upper cave) we decided that was very dangerous to enter without knowing if there would be exit, we returned.

When they decided to leave the cave we arrived again at the well-known cascade of 30 meters as Lagunillas. But we ran with the surprise that was no way to exit the canyon. Desperate we tried to climb back but was impossible to return, exhausted we did not had to spend the cold and dark night over rocks with the wet clothes. The following day we were still but desperate, until in the evening we saw a passing mule, and begin to shout " HELP, HELP.... "

A good man called Juan came near and saw us scared and requesting to be rescued. Juan threw us a rope (mecate), and to make matters worse it wasn´t long enought. " Don Junao hoped we had to climb to where mecate was....... ". One of us climbed to where the mecate was and made a knot with out cotton rope. Don Juan and its mule raised us one by one. All were thanked for the help provided by Don Juan. The scared experience was forgoten in a few days and we returned to complete the canyon.

View of the totally virgin water fall, full of vegetation in its walls.

View of the lagoon under the water fall down the first rapel, we can observe one of the adventurers in a inflatable, typical floater of that time.

We returned days later when a friend completed the canyon, doing the cave (matacan de arribe) by climbing over the mountain, discovering that the cave had exit just a few meters forward.
